E4SMA has partnered in the development of four integrated city energy system models. The models cover Cesena (Italy), Évora (Portugal), Nottingham (UK), and Trikala (Greece). The models are multiregional and were developed using the TIMES modelling framework. The time horizon spans from 2010 to 2030.
The integrated city energy system models are designed to analyze the cost-optimal mix of measures required to meet sustainable energy targets. The models take into account exogenous parameters, such as policies, environmental targets, land usage, etc.
The models were developed as part of the project InSmart – Integrative Smart City Planning. The project was funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Program.
Furthermore, E4SMA has contributed to developing a regional version of the energy system model for Italy, called MONET. The model describes the whole Italian energy system by the modelling of 20 structural-consistent and electric-interconnected regional tools. The purpose of MONET is to support energy planning at regional and national levels. The model was developed in a project for Ricerca di Sistema Energetico (RSE).
Additionally, we have supervised research work on urban long-term energy planning for the city of Torino.
